What’s Not Coming to the NYS Fair Because of New Rules
More Changes Coming to Agriculture at the New York State Fair
If you’ve been going to the New York State Fair for years, you know there are certain things you just expect to see when you walk through the gates.
For a lot of fairgoers, agriculture is a huge part of that experience. And this year, several longtime traditions and agricultural exhibits will be missing — and some of the new rules are raising even more questions.
No More Dairy Cow Birthing Center
First came the news that the dairy cow birthing center will not be returning to the fair.
The birthing center has been one of those places where you could stop for a few minutes and actually see agriculture happening right in front of you. You might walk in and see a cow getting ready to give birth, and if you were lucky, you could witness a calf being born.
It was also a chance for people who don't live on farms to see where their food comes from and learn a little more about dairy farming.
Now, that's going to be missing from the fair.
And Now, No Horses
Then came another announcement that caught a lot of attention: the New York State Horse Pullers Association has pulled out of the New York State Fair.
Barrel racing has been a tradition for years, bringing huge horses, their handlers and plenty of spectators together to watch these powerful animals compete.

"We are absolutely willing to find a compromise, but not if that compromise comes at the expense of our equine athletes or our exhibitors," said the National Barrel Horse Association.
New Animal Arrival Rules Are Raising Concerns
Under the new rules, animals can only be brought onto the fairgrounds between 11:30 PM and 8 AM the following day.
“The new move in/move out vehicle use policy, which is in effect during operating hours at The Fair, is a critical component to The Fair’s commitment to ensuring event security and pedestrian protections, and to providing a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all guests,” Katie Rey, the associate director for public information for the New York State Fair told WSYR.

For some people — especially those coming from long distances or from out of state — the new rules could mean driving for hours in the middle of the night just to make that arrival window. Then you've got to load and unload animals, often in the dark, while trying to keep both the animals and people safe.
And It's Not Just the Animals
Another change is happening inside the Horticulture Building.
Artistic Flower Design will not be at the Horticulture Building this year.
According to the organizers, the New York State Fair's new rules make it impossible for the flower show to be run efficiently.
A Very Different Agricultural Fair?
There will still be plenty of animals, exhibits, competitions, food and entertainment when the gates open on August 26.
But when you put all of these changes together — no dairy cow birthing center, no horses, new overnight animal arrival restrictions and now no Artistic Flower Design — it's hard not to notice that the agricultural side of the New York State Fair is looking a lot different.
Agriculture isn't just another attraction at the fair. For many families, exhibitors and farmers, it's the reason they go.
There will still be plenty of ways to celebrate New York agriculture at the Fair. Dairy Day returns Thursday, September 3, with activities highlighting the state’s largest agricultural sector.
The 53-foot Mobile Dairy Experience gives fairgoers an inside look at how milk gets from the farm to your table.
The Dairy Cattle Barn will also be open, giving fairgoers a chance to see the cows up close, watch them being milked, and learn how milk goes from cow to cup.
